Ambessa Build and Runes, With Her Top and Jungle Win Rates · Patch 26.20

Matriarch of War

Patch 26.20 · Stats from the 26.18 Master+ sample (7,298 games).

Ambessa, Matriarch of War, tacks a short dash onto every ability she casts, and Public Execution blinks her onto the farthest champion in a line. Master+ players take her Top far more often than Jungle and split almost evenly between Grasp of the Undying and Conqueror; Eclipse opens her most common item path.

Counter plan — how to beat Ambessa

  • Avoid extended fights — its sustain grows with every trade it survives

  • Deny the reset — it wants a kill to come back out; a warded exit removes it

  • Punish the cooldown — Ambessa is exposed while its rotation is down

  • Ward the flank — vision is what turns its best opening into a worse one

  • Respect the spike — Riot rates the kit 10/10, so a practised player gets more out of it than the average

Ability details

  • P

    Drakehound's Step

Entering an attack or movement command while casting an ability will cause Ambessa to dash a short distance once the ability is cast, granting her next attack bonus range, damage, and attack speed, and refunding energy.

    Passive — never cast

  • Q

    Cunning Sweep / Sundering Slam

Ambessa sweeps her twin drakehounds in a semicircle in front of her, dealing bonus damage to enemies hit by the blades. Striking an enemy will transform the next cast of this ability for a short period of time, causing her to slam her twin drakehounds down in a line in front of her, dealing bonus damage to the first enemy hit.

    Repudiation

Ambessa balance history

Riot's notes from patch 25.S1.1 to 26.20 change Ambessa in 6 patches. The latest is patch 26.20, published 2026-10-06.

  1. Patch 26.202026-10-06

    PDrakehound's Step

    • Damage5 - 30 (+25% bonus AD)to5 - 25 (+20% bonus AD)
    Why, in Riot's words

Ambessa has been too reliable in her late game output for players with high mastery in all brackets, but especially pro-play.

  2. Patch 26.102026-05-12

    QCunning Sweep / Sundering Slam

    • Target Max Health Damage2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6%to4 / 4.5 / 5 / 5.5 / 6%

    RPublic Execution

    • Healing Percentage10 / 12.5 / 15%to15 / 17.5 / 20%
    • Healing Effectiveness vs Monsters40%to25%
    Why, in Riot's words

After getting to see the impact of last patch’s ultimate nerfs, they’ve been very effective at increasing counterplay at high skill levels. However, we still see an opportunity to shift some power from jungle into top while promoting a bruiser playstyle. As a result, we’re giving her some better early power, while keeping her jungle clear and general lategame potential the same.

  3. Patch 26.92026-04-28

    RPublic Execution

    • Cast Time0.55to0.70
    Why, in Riot's words

Ambessa has carried the Medarda legacy a bit too well. Her brutality and fantasy has resonated with her mains, but we believe her ult has felt slightly fast to the point that players hit by it often don't have clarity on what happened. We're extending her cast time to open up clearer counterplay, and will be keeping a watchful eye on opportunities for follow-up work.

  4. Patch 26.42026-02-18

    QCunning Sweep

    • Bonus Damage to Monsters150to125
    Why, in Riot's words

We had always anticipated that Ambessa would have a jungle audience and we're happy to see that she's taken root there, but she also needs to be equally balanced across her two primary roles, so we're lightly nerfing her monster damage.

  5. Patch 25.232025-11-18

    QCunning Sweep / Sundering Slam

    • Monster Damage+125to+150
    Why, in Riot's words

Ambessa's jungle play rate never really took off but it's always been right behind top lane in terms of actual power. We're giving it a light nudge that should make her balanced in this alternate role and especially help unoptimized players who can't always get sweet spots to land on large jungle monsters.

  6. Patch 25.052025-03-04

    ELacerate

    • Damage40/65/90/115/140 (+60% bonus AD)to40/60/80/100/120 (+60 bonus AD)
    Why, in Riot's words

Ambessa is a bit too good at assassinating squishy targets quickly, so taking down some base damage to make sure she needs to hit the right number of spells to kill her targets.

Riot's data lists 3 looks for Ambessa with their own art, the base skin included and 12 chroma variants.

Ambessa's story

All who know the name Medarda respect and fear the family's leader, Ambessa. As a Noxian general, she embodies a deadly combination of ruthless strength and fearless resolve in battle. Her role as matriarch is no different, requiring great cunning to empower the Medardas while leaving no room for failure or compassion. Embracing the merciless ways of the Wolf, Ambessa will do whatever it takes to protect her family's legacy, even at the cost of her own children's love.

Methodology

Data window
Preview sample — a one-time snapshot of 65,406 ranked games (Master+, EUW/KR/NA, patch 26.18), counted by GamGem while our Riot production key is under review. Figures will update daily once it is approved. Counted 26–27 Sept 2026; patches 26.18 (35,477) · 26.19 (18,580) · 26.17 (11,048) · 26.16 (293) · 26.15 (8); by server EUW 22,382 · KR 21,922 · NA 21,065 · EUNE 20 · TR 17. 642 games without a result — remakes ended by vote in their first minutes, and games recorded with no winner — were not counted.
Rank aggregation
Master, Grandmaster and Challenger, pooled — the three ladders the count read its players from. Splitting further leaves samples too small to separate a real effect from noise.
Role assignment
A champion is filed under every lane that holds at least a tenth of its counted games — the position the match itself reports, not the champion’s class. Its headline win rate is across all of them; each lane’s own win rate and games are counted too, and a lane’s tier list ranks by them.
Counters
The two champions in the same position on opposite teams, over that pairing’s own counted games — ranked on the edge pulled toward zero by its sample size, printed raw.
Minimum sample
None — no figure is hidden for being thin. Every rate prints its games, and the confidence band is its 95% margin: Very High within ±1.5 points, High ±2.5, Moderate ±3.1 (1,000 games), Low wider.
Why a build is not a cause
An item is counted when the match ENDS with it, so late items show long games and an item bought when already ahead shows games that were being won. Correlation is what a rate can show; it is not evidence that buying the item caused the win.
Where the numbers come from
Names, classes, abilities, items and runes are Riot Data Dragon. Win, pick and ban rates, builds, keystones, spells and matchups are counted by GamGem from Riot's ranked match records. An estimate, not a count: this panel is not in the preview sample, and is labelled so.
