GTA 6 file size, preload and the code in the box: what is confirmed five weeks out
GTA 6’s file size is unpublished. Pre-load opens 12 November, boxed copies hold only a download code, and Xbox says it will not stream to PC. The checked facts.

Nobody outside Rockstar knows GTA 6’s file size, because neither Rockstar nor Sony nor Microsoft has published one. What is published is everything around it: pre-loading opens on 12 November 2026, a week before launch; the physical edition is a download code in a box, so boxed buyers download the same file; and Xbox has said the game will not stream to PC at launch.
Five weeks out, those are the practical questions — how much space, when the download starts, what the box contains, whether there is any way to play without the right console. Every answer below comes from a store listing, Rockstar’s own store FAQ, or a named statement, read on 13 October.
How many GB is GTA 6?
Unknown — and the stores say so by omission. The PlayStation Store’s product data for the game lists its rating, its features and its pre-load, and no install size. Rockstar’s own store page lists editions, bonuses and shipping, and no size either. The Microsoft Store’s data does contain one install-size field for the game, and it reads 344,731,648 bytes — about 0.34 GB. That is far too small to be the game, and it is not a number anyone should plan around.
The figure you will see most is “just under 200 GB” on PS5. Upcomer traced it to a post by the X account GTA 6 Intel — and the embedded post is dated 2 March 2024, more than two years before the article, with no evidence described. Other numbers run from 200 GB to 676 GB; Space4Games, reporting them in June, called them unreliable and noted that a day-one patch would add to whatever the base size turns out to be.
| Figure | Origin | Status |
|---|---|---|
| No figure | PlayStation Store, Rockstar Store | Official — nothing published |
| 0.34 GB | A Microsoft Store install-size field | Store data, far too small to be the game |
| “Just under 200 GB” (PS5) | An X account’s post, March 2024 | Unverified, no evidence described |
| 200 GB to 676 GB | Online claims collected in June 2026 | Called unreliable by the outlet that reported them |

When does GTA 6 preload start?
12 November 2026, one week before the 19 November launch. Rockstar’s press release says digital pre-orders can begin pre-loading that day, and its store page repeats it in the same words for every edition: “Pre-load begins November 12, 2026.” Sony’s product data lists a “7-Day Pre-load” among the contents of both editions, which is the same promise in a different unit.
The time of day is softer. A June report quoted the store listing as saying local midnight, tied to the time zone of your store account rather than your console’s clock. The Rockstar Store page we read on 13 October shows the date and no time. Midnight is the likely answer, but if you are planning to be awake for it, know that the time is reported, not printed.
What does pre-load mean in practice? The game’s files download to your console ahead of launch, so it is playable the moment it unlocks rather than after a download on launch night — but it cannot be played before then. If you want the console to fetch it on its own, Sony’s UK listing carries a condition worth checking now: “Auto-download requires Automatic Login and Auto Sign-In to be enabled on your PS5™ system.”
What time does GTA 6 unlock — what the store data shows
Rockstar has not announced an unlock time. The stores, however, carry a release timestamp in their product data, and the three PlayStation regions we checked each point at local midnight on 19 November. The Microsoft Store’s US data carries the same timestamp as Sony’s US store.
| Store | Timestamp (UTC) | In local time |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store, US | 19 Nov 2026, 05:00 | Midnight, US Eastern |
| Microsoft Store, US | 19 Nov 2026, 05:00 | Midnight, US Eastern |
| PlayStation Store, UK | 19 Nov 2026, 00:00 | Midnight, UK |
| PlayStation Store, Australia | 18 Nov 2026, 13:00 | Midnight, Sydney (19 Nov) |
Treat this as a strong hint, not a schedule. A release field in store data is what the listing displays, and publishers can stagger an unlock independently of it. The UK and Australian listings are linked here so you can check them yourself; our countdown page tracks the unlock question region by region and will move the moment Rockstar publishes a time.
Does the GTA 6 physical copy have a disc?
No. Rockstar’s store is explicit: “A disc will not be included in the box.” The physical version contains only a download code, there to support pre-load on 12 November, and the same FAQ adds the line that matters most: “An internet connection and platform account are required to download the game.” A boxed copy is a digital copy with a case.
Two details on that page catch people out. PlayStation codes from the Rockstar Store are region-locked — a box shipped to the UK works only with a UK PlayStation account, one shipped to the US or Canada only with an account registered there. And shipping starts on 12 November; orders placed after launch ship in an estimated one to seven days. The Ultimate Edition can be bought as an upgrade later, on the PlayStation Store “at any time”, according to the same page.

GTA 6 launch week: the dates that matter
Pre-load is one of five dates in the next six months that a buyer should know, and the least obvious ones are in the small print. Sony’s listing says the pre-order bonus — the Vintage Vice City Pack and one month of GTA+ — goes to anyone who buys “prior to 19 November 2026 at 23:59:59”. It also says the free month must be redeemed by 31 March 2027, and that after the month, GTA+ memberships “auto-renew monthly at the regular monthly price until canceled.”
| Date | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 12 Nov 2026 | Pre-load opens; Rockstar Store starts shipping code-in-box copies | Rockstar press release and store |
| 19 Nov 2026 | Launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Rockstar press release |
| 19 Nov 2026, 23:59:59 | Last moment to buy and still get the pre-order bonus | PlayStation Store listing |
| 31 Mar 2027 | Deadline to redeem the free month of GTA+ | PlayStation Store listing |
| A month after redeeming | GTA+ renews at the regular monthly price unless cancelled | PlayStation Store listing |
Changed your mind? A Rockstar Store pre-order is cancelled through its fulfilment partner, Xsolla, using a form linked from the store’s FAQ, with your order number and the email you ordered from. Pre-orders made on a console store follow that store’s own terms.
Can you play GTA 6 on Xbox Cloud Gaming or on PC?
Not on PC at launch, according to Xbox itself. On 6 October The Verge reported that Microsoft had won exclusive cloud-streaming rights: “The deal will mean only Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream GTA 6 to players at launch.” A day later Xbox’s chief strategy officer, Matthew Ball, wrote on X that the excitement had “led to some misreporting” and that the game “will not be streaming exclusively or to PC.”
The Verge then wrote that the deal “appears to be more complicated than I originally reported”, while still saying the game will be on Xbox Cloud Gaming. Put the two statements side by side and the only point both sides agree on is that a PC player cannot stream it on 19 November. Whether an Xbox console owner can stream it at launch was not addressed by Ball. No PC version has been announced at all; our PC page covers that separately.
On PlayStation, Sony’s product data lists “Remote Play supported”, which lets you play your own console’s copy on another screen, including a PlayStation Portal. That is not cloud streaming — the game still runs on your PS5. And on Nintendo’s side the answer is a polite nothing: asked by Variety about Switch 2, Nintendo of America president Devon Pritchard said “That’s going to be a conversation for Take Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time.”
Is GTA 6 enhanced for PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X?
The badges say yes; what they mean is unannounced. Sony’s listing carries “PS5 Pro Enhanced”, and the Microsoft Store lists “Optimized for Xbox Series X|S” as a capability. Neither label says whether the improvement is resolution, frame rate, ray tracing or something else, and Rockstar has published no performance modes. Every “60 fps on PS5 Pro” claim you see is an inference from a badge — the frame-rate argument, with each side’s source, lives on our radar page.
So the short version, for anyone getting ready: the download starts on 12 November, the box is a code, the size is a mystery until your console shows it, and the only way to play on 19 November is on a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S that you own.
What this establishes
- No official GTA 6 file size exists: the PlayStation Store and Rockstar Store list none, and the circulating ~200 GB figure traces to an X account’s post from March 2024.
- Pre-loading begins on 12 November 2026; Sony lists a “7-Day Pre-load”.
- The physical edition contains only a download code, needs an internet connection and platform account, and its PlayStation codes are region-locked.
- Xbox says GTA 6 will not stream exclusively or to PC at launch.
What stays open
- The install size and the size of any day-one patch.
- The exact pre-load and unlock times. Store data points to local midnight; Rockstar has not printed a time.
- Whether Xbox console owners can stream GTA 6 through Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch.
- What “PS5 Pro Enhanced” improves for this game.
