GTA 6 age rating: M in the US, 18 almost everywhere else — and two boards still pending
GTA 6 is rated M (17+) by the ESRB, PEGI 18 in the UK and R18+ in Australia. Every rating by region, what the warnings mean, and the boards yet to rule.

Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ in the United States and 18 almost everywhere else. The ESRB’s own record lists seven content descriptors and in-game purchases; the UK has PEGI 18, Australia R18+ and New Zealand R18. Two boards had still not ruled on 13 October: Germany’s USK and Brazil’s ClassInd both show “rating pending”.
The ratings arrived fast and messily. Three weeks ago Rockstar’s own site still carried a Rating Pending badge; since then an Australian classification changed, and a detailed PEGI description was posted and then deleted. This piece reads each rating from the store that displays it, says what each warning means, and keeps the deleted description where it belongs — reported, not confirmed.
What is GTA 6 rated? Every region we checked
The PlayStation Store carries the rating each board has issued in that market, and its product data was read for ten regions on 13 October. The UK listing, for example, shows PEGI 18 with four warnings; the Australian shows R 18+ with three. Microsoft’s UK store agrees on PEGI 18, listing drugs, sex and violence.
| Region | Board | Rating | Warnings listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States, Canada | ESRB | M — Mature 17+ | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol; In-Game Purchases |
| United Kingdom | PEGI | 18 | Drugs, Sexual Content, Violence; In-Game Purchases |
| Australia | Classification Board | R 18+ | Drug Use, High Impact Violence, Sex Scenes |
| New Zealand | Classification Office | R18 | Drug Use, Graphic Violence, Nudity, Offensive Language, Sex Scenes |
| India | IARC (generic) | 18+ | Drugs, Extreme Violence, Nudity, Sex; In-Game Purchases |
| Saudi Arabia | GCAM | 21 | None listed |
| United Arab Emirates | NMC | 21 | None listed |
| Germany | USK | Rating pending | — |
| Brazil | ClassInd | Rating pending | — |

Is GTA 6 18+?
In most of the world, yes. The UK has PEGI 18, Australia R 18+ and New Zealand R18, and India’s storefront shows IARC 18+. Two Gulf markets go further: the Saudi listing shows GMEDIA 21 and the UAE listing MRO 21, each with no descriptors at all.
The United States and Canada are the exception, and only by a year. M for Mature means content “generally suitable for ages 17 and up” and may include intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and strong language. The step above it, AO for Adults Only, covers content that may include prolonged intense violence, graphic sexual content or gambling with real currency. GTA 6 did not get it: in North America it is an M game. So the short answer to “what age is GTA 6 for” depends on where you live — 17 in the US and Canada; 18 in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and India; 21 in Saudi Arabia and the UAE; and not yet decided in Germany or Brazil.
What the ESRB warnings actually mean
The seven descriptors are defined terms, not adjectives, and they are worth reading precisely. The ESRB’s guide defines them as follows — and the GTA 6 record has, so far, only the short descriptor list rather than a longer written summary of specific scenes. For comparison, the ESRB’s Grand Theft Auto V record for PS4 and Xbox One lists exactly the same seven descriptors.
| Descriptor | ESRB definition |
|---|---|
| Blood and Gore | Depictions of blood or the mutilation of body parts |
| Intense Violence | Graphic and realistic-looking depictions of physical conflict |
| Mature Humor | Depictions or dialogue involving “adult” humor, including sexual references |
| Nudity | Graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity |
| Strong Language | Explicit and/or frequent use of profanity |
| Strong Sexual Content | Explicit and/or frequent depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity |
| Use of Drugs and Alcohol | The consumption or use of illegal drugs; the consumption of alcoholic beverages |
Why do the Australian and NZ listings say “Sex Scenes”?
Because those boards use that phrase and the ESRB does not. The New Zealand listing shows R18 for drug use, graphic violence, nudity, offensive language and sex scenes; Australia’s R 18+ lists drug use, high impact violence and sex scenes. GTABoom, which checked the regional stores on 2 October, noted that the “Sex Scenes” wording appears only on those two storefronts and that the rating does not say which characters or activities prompted it.
Australia’s rating is also the one that moved. GTA Intel reported on 23 September that the Classification Board had classified the game MA 15+, while noting the Board’s site would not load to confirm it; its 6 October update records R18+ instead. The store now shows R 18+. We could not open the Board’s database either, so the reason for the change is not something we can report.
What did the deleted PEGI description say?
On 2 October a detailed PEGI content summary for the game appeared online and was then removed. IBTimes UK reported its wording on 3 October — weapons capable of “detailed decapitation and dismemberment”, cocaine that can be carried and consumed by the player, nudity and intercourse, and interactive private dances — and stated plainly that it could not verify the removed text against a live page.
So read it at that grade: a reported version of a document that no longer exists publicly. It is consistent with the live ratings — PEGI’s drugs, sexual content and violence warnings are real and on the store — but the specific scenes it describes are not confirmed by PEGI, by Rockstar or by anything you can open today.
The live PEGI wording is itself not quite settled across storefronts. GTABoom read “Extreme Violence” and “Nudity” among the warnings on the UK PlayStation Store on 2 October; Sony’s product data on 13 October lists Drugs, Sexual Content, Violence and In-Game Purchases, and Microsoft’s UK store lists drugs, sex and violence. The rating — 18 — is the same everywhere. The exact descriptor set is what PEGI’s own database would settle, and it did not load for us.

Does “In-Game Purchases” mean GTA 6 has microtransactions?
Not necessarily. The ESRB defines the label as offers “to purchase digital goods or premiums with real world currency”, with upgrades among its examples, and both console stores sell an Ultimate Edition upgrade for this game. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told Kinda Funny in August that there is no real-money spending inside the game, according to Push Square’s account. The label is accurate either way; it simply does not tell you which kind of purchase it means.
GTA 6 for parents: what the console settings do with this rating
The rating is not only a label on a box; both consoles read it. On a PS5, the age-level setting for a child account lets a game start only if “the age rating is the same or lower than the child’s age”. A game above the limit is blocked with a screen from which the child can request an exception, and the family manager gets a notification and an email to approve or refuse it.
Spending is handled separately and defaults to closed: Sony’s page says the monthly spending limit for a child account “is set to 0” by default, with any purchases charged to the family manager’s wallet. On Xbox, the Family Settings app lets parents “filter or allow games, apps and websites based on the age of their children”, and an “Ask a Parent” email arrives when a child wants to buy something. In practice, a PS5 child account for a 16-year-old in the US, or a 17-year-old in the UK, will not start GTA 6 until a parent approves it; on Xbox, the result depends on the filter the parent has chosen.
One thing the rating does not tell a parent is what an online mode would add, because there is none at launch for it to describe: Sony’s listing marks the game as “Offline play only”. If an online mode arrives later, its chat and player interaction would be a separate question from anything rated here.
How the rating arrived, in three weeks
| Date | What changed | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 22 Sep | Rockstar’s GTA VI page shows an ESRB Rating Pending badge | GTA Intel |
| 23 Sep | An Australian MA 15+ classification reported, unconfirmed | GTA Intel |
| 1–2 Oct | M 17+ appears on the US PlayStation and Xbox stores; PEGI 18 in the UK; R18+ and R18 in Australia and NZ | GTABoom |
| 2 Oct | A detailed PEGI description is posted, then removed | IBTimes UK |
| 8 Oct | Rockstar’s own Newswire prints the seven ESRB descriptors in its footer | Rockstar |
| 13 Oct | ESRB record live; USK and ClassInd still pending | ESRB, PlayStation Store |
The last row is the one to watch. Germany and Brazil are large markets, and until the USK and ClassInd publish, nobody can tell you the German or Brazilian age limit. Rockstar’s Newswire now prints the ESRB line on its GTA VI posts, which is the publisher’s own confirmation of the US rating. When the German or Brazilian board publishes, this table is the one we will update, with the date we read it.
What this establishes
- The ESRB rates GTA 6 M for Mature 17+ with seven descriptors and In-Game Purchases; the US and Canadian stores show the same.
- GTA 6 is PEGI 18 in the UK, R 18+ in Australia, R18 in New Zealand, IARC 18+ in India and 21 in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
- The Australian and New Zealand listings are the only ones that use the words “Sex Scenes”.
- Germany’s USK and Brazil’s ClassInd had not rated the game on 13 October 2026.
What stays open
- What the German and Brazilian ratings will be.
- Whether the deleted PEGI description was accurate. It is reported by IBTimes UK and could not be verified against a live page.
- Why Australia’s reported MA 15+ became R 18+. The Board’s database could not be opened to check.
- Whether the ESRB will publish a longer written summary of specific content, as it does for some titles.
