The figures in circulation — usually 118 to 132 square miles — are measurements taken off community reconstructions, and they differ because the reconstructions do. Measuring a reconstruction tells you the size of the reconstruction. Nothing published states whether the ratios above count water, or interiors.

Measuring a reconstruction tells you the size of the reconstruction. It is a range rather than a number because the projects disagree with each other — and every one of them is a drawing of a game nobody outside the studio has played.

A ratio derived from a reconstruction, not from the game — and the coverage that reported it says so, noting that unrevealed areas could move it in either direction. It is also higher than the publisher’s own “twice”, which is the comparison people quote it alongside.

This is the anchor almost every GTA VI figure is multiplied against, and the publisher has never confirmed it. It was reported as something early players worked out, not as something Rockstar stated.

The most-cited list of GTA map sizes, which gives a figure for all five maps.
It contradicts the 49 sq mi figure by two thirds, and the list names no source and no method for any of its five numbers. Both figures are quoted confidently, often on the same page, and the gap between them is larger than most of the maps being compared.

The two ratios at the top of this page are the only size statements that came from the people who built it, and they will stay the only ones until somebody at the studio says otherwise or the game ships and can be walked.

Each name is the publisher’s. Almost everything else below is a reading of published footage — ours or somebody else’s — and every card says which is which.
What the publisher stated
Named as the setting, and first in the publisher’s own Places menu.
What has been read from footage
The largest built-up area, on the south-east shoreline. Neighbourhood names read from published material include Ocean Beach, South Beach, Little Haiti, Little Havana, the Venetian Islands and Crosstown.
The city itself is named by the publisher. The neighbourhood list is assembled by outside projects from footage and signage, and no published statement enumerates it.

A chain of islands across the south, described in coverage as where the protagonists’ starting apartment sits.
The name and its screenshots are the publisher’s. The starting-apartment placement is a reading of story material rather than a stated fact.

What has been read from footage
South-western wetland — swamp, cypress, slow water and isolated settlements. Coverage attributes airboats to it as a vehicle class, along with alligators and a wildlife organisation.
The name is the publisher’s and the terrain is visible in its screenshots. The airboat class and the named organisation come from readings of footage, not from a statement.
