Every figure shows its source. Where a source is missing, the number is a placeholder — and it is never written as fact.

What Rockstar showed — and what it only described

The Extended Look produced three different kinds of fact, and almost every article since has merged them. Sorting the stated from the shown from the described, with a source on each.

Three weeks after the Extended Look aired, almost every sentence written about Grand Theft Auto VI belongs to one of three categories — and almost nothing written about it says which. Some of what you have read is a statement the publisher put in its own material. Some of it is a thing a viewer watched happen on screen. And some of it is a description given to journalists in a closed room, by a developer holding a controller they were not allowed to touch.

Those are not the same kind of fact. They do not carry the same weight, they cannot be checked the same way, and they will not age the same way once the game ships on 19 November. This is an attempt to sort them.

What Rockstar has actually stated

The stated pile is small and it is solid. A release date of 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Two editions at $79.99 and $99.99. And, as of 17 September, a soundtrack: Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, arriving the same day as the game.

That last one is worth pausing on, because it is the newest thing on the list and it is unambiguous. Rockstar says the album carries 34 original tracks, made in partnership with Atlantic Records, from a roster that includes Travis Scott, Future, Metro Boomin, Morgan Wallen, PinkPantheress and Keith Richards. Six singles went out on announcement day. The limited vinyl had sold out before most people read the post.

Notice what a stated fact looks like: a number, a date, a name, on a page the publisher controls. Nothing on this site grades higher, and almost nothing else about this game qualifies.

What was shown, which is not the same thing

The Extended Look ran twenty-six minutes and forty-nine seconds and it showed a great deal. Six wanted stars return, restoring the maximum that Grand Theft Auto V cut to five — and the footage backs it with police pursuits involving patrol cars, armed officers and helicopters as the level climbs.

Character switching returns, and the showing demonstrates it rather than mentioning it: Lucia base jumps from a tower, the camera pulls up and away across the world, and it comes back down somewhere else entirely, on Jason. Elsewhere Jason meets a dog and is offered three options — Pet, Scold, Study. Someone hangs off the back of a moving car while a livestream feed runs in the corner of the frame.

Also Rockstar’s, also via IGDB. A frame is evidence that something exists; it is not evidence of where it sits on a map.

And there is a long list of things you watch happen: basketball, pool, weightlifting, swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, fishing, hunting, base jumping, parachuting, the shooting range, car racing, dirt bikes, jet skis, fanboats. Every one of those is a stronger claim than a rumour and a weaker claim than a statement. It exists in the build that was recorded. Whether it ships, and in what form, is a different sentence.

“A frame is evidence that something exists. It is not evidence that it works the way you assume, that it survives to launch, or that it is where you think it is.”

And what was only described

Here is where most coverage quietly loses the thread. The most-repeated gameplay detail of the last month — that police can identify Jason and Lucia by their clothes, their vehicle, and whether they were seen together — was not explained in the Netflix broadcast at all. It came out of a separate, hands-off preview at Rockstar North, where a developer played and journalists took notes.

The system has a name, the Criminal Profile, and Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson described it as a tracker of how violently and maliciously you choose to commit crimes — not a morality meter, and not a direct copy of Red Dead Redemption 2’s honour system. Shaking a pursuit can mean changing clothes, changing vehicles, or splitting up.

It sounds excellent. It may well be excellent. But nobody outside Rockstar has played it, and a described system is a description until somebody holds the controller. That is not scepticism about the studio — it is a note about what kind of sentence you are reading.

Leonida is a ratio, not a measurement

Ask how big the world is and you will be given a number. Ask where that number came from and it dissolves. What Rockstar has given is a comparison, and only a comparison: Rob Nelson told YouTuber TGG that the world is twice the size of GTA 5, and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City alone is twice Los Santos; with its surroundings, eleven times larger than Los Santos and its own.

Rockstar has never printed a square mileage. Every "132 square miles" headline you have seen was somebody measuring a community reconstruction and rounding. That is not a scandal — reconstructions of GTA V’s map before launch turned out close — but it is a different object from a figure a studio published, and it should not be dressed in the same font.

Why this is hereFour minutes on the comparison itself, published the day after the showing. It is here because it does the one thing prose is bad at: putting the three worlds beside each other at the same scale. Note that even IGN is working from the ratio — nobody has a measurement.

How long does it take to cross? Four answers, none of them Rockstar’s

This is the question that got us here, because it is the one that travels fastest. If you have opened a feed in the last month you have seen a tidy set of numbers: 178 minutes on foot, 35 by car, seven by plane. They are repeated as a plain fact. We went looking for the article behind them and could not find one — the trail runs through Facebook, Instagram, Threads and TikTok, and every stop is another repost.

Four published answers to one question, read on 20 September 2026
SourceCrossing by carWhere the figure comes from
GTA VI Spot18 minutesA community coordinate-mapping project; also gives 3 minutes by jet and 1h20 on foot
GamingBible20.5–27.3 minutesA forum reader scaling GTA 5’s known times; the writing is called “my very rough numbers”
Social repostsabout 35 minutesNo publication found behind it
GTABaseNo figurePublishes a size estimate and no traversal time in any mode

The gap between the lowest and highest is nearly double, and the reason is not carelessness. The two sources that do print a time are not measuring the same map: GTA VI Spot builds on a landmass roughly 2.7 times GTA 5’s, while GTABase puts the world at about 1.7 times. A crossing time inherits whatever outline it was computed from, and neither outline is Rockstar’s.

They are also not answering the same question. GamingBible’s figure is for the perimeter; GTA VI Spot’s is corner to corner. Those are different journeys wearing the same column heading — and only one of the pages says which it measured.

A publisher image, credited to IGDB. You could believe this is anywhere in Leonida and we could not correct you, which is the honest position for every site that does not work at Rockstar.

What is still genuinely unknown

There is no announced PC version. Not delayed, not hinted — unannounced, with no date, no window and no store page. There is no published mission count, no chapter list and no act structure. There are no cheat codes, although a producer has said the phone-dial system returns. And there is no confirmed online mode.

That last one moved, slightly, in September — and it moved in the least glamorous venue imaginable. Rockstar referred to a confidential “32-player online format” in employment tribunal filings, describing it as one of the company’s most closely guarded secrets. It is the first time the company has publicly acknowledged an online component at all. It is also a court document, not an announcement, and it does not say what the format is for.

What the showing actually changed

It changed less than the volume suggests, and more than the sceptics will admit. It moved a large number of things from "rumoured" to "shown": the wanted ceiling, the switching, the breadth of activities, the fact that the world reacts to you in ways GTA V did not attempt. That is real progress and it is checkable — the footage is public.

What it did not do is convert a single mechanic from shown to played. Not one person outside the studio has driven across this map, including the journalists who watched somebody else drive across part of it. Until 19 November, the honest answer to "how long does it take" is that nobody knows, and the second-most honest answer is a range with its method attached.

The last of six, and the same rule as the other five: Rockstar made it, IGDB serves it to us, and what it depicts is not ours to assert.

If you take one habit from this piece, take that one. When a number arrives without the method that produced it, it is not a measurement. It is a vibe — and it will be quoted for two more months as though it were a fact.

What this establishes

  • Rockstar has stated a date, two prices, two platforms and a 34-track album — and almost nothing else about this game reaches that grade.
  • The Extended Look showed six wanted stars, character switching and fifteen named activities. Shown is a real grade, and it is below stated.
  • The Criminal Profile and police identification were never in the broadcast. They come from a hands-off preview, which is a third grade again.
  • Rockstar has published a size RATIO and never a measurement, so every square-mileage figure in circulation is somebody measuring a reconstruction.

What stays open

  • How long it takes to cross the map. Published answers run from 18 to about 35 minutes by car and rest on two different map outlines.
  • Whether a PC version exists. It is unannounced — no date, no window, no store page.
  • What the “32-player online format” in the tribunal filings actually refers to. The document does not say.
  • How many missions the game has. No list, no chapter count, no act structure has been published.
