What Blizzard says this class is

Strengths. One of the most powerful and resourceful damage classes, with Polymorph crowd control and ranged area damage stronger and more varied than any other class. They stay useful to any party or raid for buffs, food and water, and control.

Limits. Extremely fragile: they die easily if caught in melee.

Baseline abilities

  • Frostfire Bolt

    BaselineLevel 40

New 3-second-cast spell that is both Fire and Frost: big upfront damage plus a damage-over-time and Slow. It uses the higher of your Fire and Frost spell damage and the lower target resistance, so Fire and Frost hybrids benefit from both.

  • Comprehension

    New

New Mage minor tradeskill: Comprehend Scroll (General spellbook tab) reads scrolls dropped by creatures.

  • Cone of Cold

    Changed

Shorter duration, part of a fix against gold farmers and boosters kiting packs.

  • Mage Armor

    Changed

    More Mana regeneration from Spirit.

    Same benefit for 2 points.

  • Arcane Focus

    Redesigned

    Now raises Arcane hit chance.

  • Improved Channeling

  • Arcane Geometry

    NewRow 3

    More range on Arcane spells.

  • Arcane Impact

    Changed

Formerly Improved Arcane Explosion: crit chance on all Arcane spells.

  • Arcane Blast

    New11-point talent

A redesign: 2.5-second cast, damage, then all your other spells do more and it costs more, stacking 4 times for 8 seconds or until another spell. Encourages using the rest of the toolkit. Redesigned again in the 15 October beta build.

  • Improved Counterspell

    Changed

One point gives a shorter Silence every time instead of a 50% chance.

  • Missile Barrage

    New16-point talent

Arcane Blast, Fireball, Frostbolt and Frostfire Bolt can make the next Arcane Missiles channel twice as fast and free; double chance from Arcane Blast. In the 15 October beta build it moved to the first row as a 2-point talent.

  • Arcane Mind

    Redesigned

Raises Intellect instead of maximum Mana, plus Arcane crit damage.

  • Arcane Power

    Changed

Removed or merged: Magic Attunement became baseline.

WoW Forever Mage Fire talents

8 changes named
  • Wake of Fire

Formerly Improved Fire Blast; row 1; each kill of a non-trivial target boosts your next Fire Blast's crit.

  • Incineration

    MovedRow 1

Formerly Incinerate; row 1; also helps Ice Lance and Arcane Blast.

  • Improved Fireball

    Changed

    Also shortens Frostfire Bolt's cast.

  • Ignite

    Changed

One debuff per Mage instead of one shared by all Mages; no damage lost when crits land close together.

  • Impact

    Changed

Low-rank casting lowers the chance to trigger.

  • Improved Scorch

    Changed

The debuff benefits only the casting Mage.

  • Heating Up

    NewRow 4

Needs Pyroblast: non-periodic crits with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch cut your next Pyroblast cast by 25%, 3 stacks (1.5 seconds). Forever's take on Hot Streak.

  • Blast Wave

    Changed

    No longer needs Pyroblast.

Removed or merged: None removed.

WoW Forever Mage Frost talents

    MovedRow 3

Instant, low damage, but +300% damage against a Frozen target (or treated as Frozen by Fingers of Frost).

Slow now at most 40% (was 65%), to curb AoE farming.

Moved down to row 5, now the 21-point gold medal; cooldown 10 minutes (was 5).

  • Fingers of Frost

    NewRow 5

Needed for Ice Lance: Chill effects can grant charges that make spells treat the target as Frozen.

  • Winter's Chill

    Changed

Benefits only the casting Mage; crit bonus only for Frostbolt and Ice Lance.

Removed or merged: None removed.

How is the WoW Forever Mage different from Classic Era?

Classic Era → Forever
  • Arcane Blast and Hot Streak come from later expansions.

Redesigned as the 11-point Arcane Blast talent and the row 4 Fire talent Heating Up.

  • All Mages in an encounter shared one Ignite debuff.

    One Ignite per Mage.

  • Improved Blizzard: up to 65% slow.

    Up to 40%.

  • Weapon Skill on gear.
