What changed for hunter pets

6 lines
  • Gear scaling. Pets get increased stats from their Hunter’s gear and can no longer receive player buffs that increase their stats.
  • Foxes. A new family with Trickster’s Dance: dodge chance and attack speed for 12 seconds.
  • Bird of Prey. Owls are now called Birds of Prey and use Mine!.
  • One ability per family. Each family has one ability unique to it, and every family learns Bite or Claw and Dive or Dash.
  • Pet as tank. Hunters have one combat role, damage, but can use the pet as a tank in solo and small group play.
  • No pet at all. Lone Wolf is a new 11-point talent: 20% more damage while the Hunter has no active pet.

How taming works

  • Tame only beasts up to your level. Tame Beast no longer works on beasts higher than the Hunter’s level (24 September beta build). Beta source
  • Tame Beast spell. Level 10, a 20-second channel at 30 yards that costs 60% of base mana; your armor is reduced by 100% while you tame. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • A new pet starts unhappy. Once tamed, the beast is very unhappy and disloyal; the spell text tells you to feed it at once. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • Interruptions fail the taming. Losing the beast’s attention fails the taming; stuns, knock downs and silences count. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • Beast Lore shows the diet. Learned at level 24; shows damage, health, armor, special resistances and diet. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source

Training, loyalty and happiness

  • Training points. Pets earn training points by leveling and growing more loyal, and spend them on abilities; Growl costs none. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • Untraining. Pet trainers in major cities can untrain a pet; the cost rises from 10 silver to a 10 gold cap. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • Where ranks come from. Ranks come from pet trainers or from tamed beasts that already know them; the pet learns the ability by using it in battle. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • Abilities are by family in Forever. Every family can learn Bite or Claw, sometimes both, and Dive or Dash, and has one unique ability. Forever training-point costs are not published. Blizzard source
  • Six loyalty ranks. Rebellious, Unruly, Submissive, Dependable, Faithful, Best Friend; loyalty follows happiness and a new pet starts at the lowest rank. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • Loyalty is in the beta. A 24 September fix concerned pet happiness not decreasing once a pet was at max loyalty, so both systems are present in Forever’s beta. Beta source
  • Happiness changes damage. Happy pets do 125% of normal damage, Content 100%, Unhappy 75%. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • How much one feeding gives. 80, 170 or 350 happiness by food quality, spread over 20 seconds; combat interrupts it. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source
  • Six food types. Bread, cheese, fish, fruit, fungus and meat; food close to the pet’s level works better, and pets that eat bread can eat mage-conjured food. Classic baseline, Forever not confirmed source

Beast Mastery pet talents

7 lines
  • Endurance Training. Thick Hide was merged into it, so it grants the pet Health and Armor.
  • Focused Fire. New: increases all damage the Hunter and pet deal while the pet is active.
  • Aspect of the Monkey. Twice the Dodge for the Hunter, and the pet gains half the benefit.
  • Intimidation. Now needs Bestial Swiftness and gives the pet 100% increased critical strike chance on its next attack.
  • Improved Mend Pet. Also lowers the Mana cost of Mend Pet.
  • Summon Hawk. New 16-point talent: instant damage and a Hawk attacks your target for 18 sec, up to 2 Hawks, cooldown shared with Arcane Shot.
  • Unleashed Fury and Ferocity. Pet damage and critical bonuses are reduced slightly and now also benefit Hawk summons.
