Can you change your WoW Forever ruleset? Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore
Players cannot freely hop between rulesets; to play under a different one you create a new character there. The one exception is a Hardcore character that has died.
World of Warcraft: Forever has no realms. Blizzard lists five rulesets, and moving between them is deliberately limited: to play under another one you make a new character there. This page lists the five rulesets, what is account-wide, the one Hardcore exception, and a short quiz that maps your answers to a ruleset using only those published rules.
Can you change your ruleset in WoW Forever?
No. Blizzard says players cannot freely hop between rulesets; to play under a different one you create a new character in that ruleset. The one exception comes with Hardcore: a Hardcore character that dies can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP. Collections and Legacy Points stay account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore handled differently.

Does WoW Forever have realms or a server list?
No. Blizzard moves away from the traditional realm-selection screen: you choose a ruleset first, and the structure is realmless. Each ruleset works as a broad player ecosystem rather than a single realm. You can also set a Preferred Online Language, an account-wide setting, to meet players who share it.

How many rulesets does WoW Forever have?
Five: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying, Roleplay-PvP and Hardcore. Blizzard’s ruleset article was updated on 22 October to add Roleplay-PvP for launch on 4 November, and Hardcore arrives sometime after launch. No Roleplay-PvP rules are published yet, so its faction limits and flagging are unknown.

Can Horde and Alliance group together in WoW Forever?
No. Blizzard says Horde and Alliance players still cannot group together. Grouping, dungeons and raids are also limited to the same ruleset, because cross-ruleset grouping is not supported. Battlegrounds are the exception: they may include players from other rulesets, but Hardcore stays separate even there.

When does Hardcore come out in WoW Forever?
After launch, with no date from Blizzard. Its ruleset article says Hardcore will be available sometime after launch, and the What’s Next recap lists it on the post-launch roadmap. Warcraft Wiki puts it in winter 2026/2027, which is the wiki’s reading, not a Blizzard sentence.

Where sources disagree: four rulesets or five?
Blizzard’s Deep Dive recap still names four rulesets, Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore. The ruleset article, updated on 22 October, adds Roleplay-PvP for launch. We follow the newer article and show the older count so readers who saw four are not confused.

PvP faction lock
On the PvP ruleset you can create characters for one faction only. An Alliance character there rules out a Horde one, and the reverse. Normal, Roleplaying and Hardcore allow both.
Faction balance on PvP is managed with systems like Season of Discovery’s, where creating a character for a faction could be limited for a while.
Can I still PvP?
- PvP — PvP in play: you are flagged automatically in every area that is not a sanctuary or owned by your own faction, so expect to be attacked while questing.
- Normal — Normal in play: in most areas other players cannot attack you. You opt in with /pvp and undo it with a second /pvp. You are also flagged in the other faction’s areas or when you attack a flagged target, and the flag falls after 5 minutes without player combat. Battlegrounds can be queued.
- Hardcore — Hardcore in play: it mainly follows Normal rules, a character has one life, and battlegrounds are not available there.
- Roleplaying / Roleplay-PvP — PvP is not stated separately in our sources.
What happens when Hardcore dies?
- 1Start Hardcore
Hardcore characters live in a fully enclosed ecosystem, and Hardcore players stay out of other rulesets’ battlegrounds.
- 2The character dies
Hardcore in play: it mainly follows Normal rules, a character has one life, and battlegrounds are not available there.
- 3It can transfer
When a Hardcore character dies it can transfer to another ruleset, including PvP.
Hardcore is not open on launch day. Blizzard says it will be available sometime after launch and gives no date.
Warcraft Wiki lists Hardcore under Winter 2026/2027.
Method adds that a dead Hardcore character can be moved to any other ruleset and that no other transfers between rulesets exist.
Hardcore progress, collections and rewards can become available elsewhere, but progress from other rulesets does not flow back into Hardcore.
Why: the Hardcore flow
Each step is a published statement. The steps, any cost and whether the faction must match are not published.

What carries over between rulesets?
- Collections and Legacy are account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore handled differently.
- Legacy Points are shared across your alts (up to 65) and spent per character.
What we could not confirm
- Blizzard’s update says only that Roleplay-PvP arrives at launch; its rules (faction limits, flagging, name rules) are not published in our sources, so the quiz does not score it.
- How a dead Hardcore character is moved (the steps, any cost, and whether the target faction must match your PvP faction) is not in our sources; they say only that it can move to another ruleset.
- Hardcore is not playable yet, so its rules come from Blizzard’s announcement and Method’s Beta-era guide; the detailed rules may change once it opens.
- The in-play descriptions of Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Hardcore marked Method come from a third-party guide, not from Blizzard.

Names, regions and language
- Forever has no realms; the choice you make at the start is a ruleset, not a server.
- In practice each ruleset is one large server per region, such as Normal on the EU region, and layering means you do not see every player.
- Each character has two names, and the full pair must be unique within a region, not only within a ruleset.
- Method adds that a name taken on one ruleset is unavailable to you on every ruleset of that region, but free in another region.
- Roleplaying in play: it mainly follows Normal rules but expects you to roleplay, and its names must be believable for a person in the world. Other rulesets allow puns that are not offensive.
- Each region needs its own WoW account and subscription, and nothing is shared between regions.
- The Preferred Online Language is set in the Game Menu under Options, System, Languages and Social. It is account-wide with a 24-hour cooldown, and you meet others who share it.
